About Fungus Gnats (Sciarid Flies):
Fungus gnats are among the most destructive pests that indoor growers can face, often as damaging as spider mites—if not worse. They primarily damage crops by attacking the root system, making them harder to detect early on. Spider mites, on the other hand, are easier to spot on plant leaves.
The first sign of fungus gnat infestation is typically the appearance of small (3-5mm) flies on the surface of the growing medium. By this point, the plant is already under stress. Fungus gnat females can lay up to 200 eggs in warm conditions. These eggs hatch into larvae (maggots) that feed aggressively on the plant's roots, weakening the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients. This damage can also open the door for root diseases, leaving the plant vulnerable to infection.
In just two weeks, the larvae mature into adults, who can lay another batch of 200 eggs. This rapid cycle can result in up to 20,000 maggots damaging the roots within just four weeks. It’s critical to start treatment before you see adult flies. Early intervention is most effective, which is why commercial growers use T-Drops as a preventative.
Signs of Infestation:
-
Small black flies walking on the surface of the growing medium (they may fly when disturbed).
-
Larvae among the roots: look for tiny, clear or yellowish larvae with black heads.
-
Plant symptoms may mimic nutrient deficiencies, and root diseases like Pythium can infect the plant through the damaged roots.
How T-Drops Works: T-Drops (formerly Nilnat) is a biological treatment that targets fungus gnat larvae. It contains a microscopic crystal that, when ingested by the larvae, swells in their gut, causing fatal damage to their digestive system. While T-Drops doesn’t kill the adult flies, it effectively targets the larvae. You may still spot the occasional adult fly, but rest assured the larvae are being dealt with.
Keep in mind that fungus gnats can enter your growing area from nearby sources, such as nurseries or other moist environments. Preventative measures, like using T-Drops and keeping your growing area clean and dry, are essential.
Additional Tips:
-
Maintain a dry growing environment to discourage gnats.
-
Regularly remove dead leaves and debris from the growing area.
